“WHAT IS HIS NAME?”

“Moses replied, ‘When I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your ancestors sent me to you’, they will ask me, ‘What is his name?’ So what can I tell them?’”

Ex 3:13 GNB

Today we sometimes hear it said, “What’s in a name?” It indicates that Peter is as good a name as Paul and that Pam is as good as Petronella. However, many African people still carry names that indicate more than a handle. One is “Blessing” and another is “Makepeace”.
Moses was concerned not only about his inadequacy, but also about his lack of knowledge of God. If he was to be the bearer of God’s commands to the people they would be full of questions. And if he made demands on them and demands that would put their lives at risk, he would need to have some credibility with them. If he knew the name of their God, that would at least be a start. In the Bible a name was a deeply significant fact about a person. It was his (or her) “story”, and was usually indicative of what the parents hoped a person would be. For God, his name summed up who he was and what he wanted to make known about himself. The question the Israelites would ask was a way of saying, “What revelation of God do you bring?” This is what Moses’ query was all about.
Christian believers know that when God came in Christ he revealed himself in an altogether new and complete way. Christ is the full revelation of God the Father. And God is now defined as “the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ”. We honour and worship the name of Jesus and of his Father-God.
