“Put on the full armour of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes”.
Eph 6:11 NIV
Some people think that war is the final culmination of all evil. It has been estimated that World War II cost something like sixty million lives and the nuclear finale to that conflict set a standard of destruction that strikes fear universally to this day. But still wars happen from time to time.
The people of the ancient world “believed implicitly in demons and devils and evil spirits. They believed that the air was filled with these evil spirits, all determined to work men harm. The words which Paul uses, powers, authorities, world-rulers, are all names for different classes of these evil spirits and demons. To Paul the whole universe was a battleground. The Christian had not only to contend with the attacks of people; he had to contend with the attacks of spiritual forces which were fighting against God. We may not take Paul’s actual language literally; but from experience we do know this, that there is an active power of evil in this world” (W.Barclay, The Epistle to the Ephesians, p133). And Paul was being guarded by a Roman soldier. It brought the fact of military war very close to him. And it suggested the picture of spiritual warfare as well.
The kind of spiritual warfare Paul described is still with us today in many temptations and dangerous seductions. One of the most prevalent is greed and the desire to get rich quick. Over-indulgence in drugs and alcohol as well as sexual wandering are other powerful forms in which the Devil attacks. You have been warned.
PRAYER THOUGHT Lord, help us to fight all forms of evil in the world.
