“What came into existence was Life, and the Life was light to live by”.
Jn 1:4 EHP
When the national electricity grid bombs out there is chaos. We grope for candles, gas lamps, and torches. We can’t even while away the time watching television. Light is essential for life, although the sleep that darkness brings is just as necessary!
In the vast reaches of time, things came into existence – all part of the Word that was God’s self-expression. But many of those things did not have life. They were just inanimate objects – rocks, moon, stars, earth, and even water. Since the Word was instrumental in creating all things it imparted life into some things of the universe. This was a quantum leap in the business of God disclosing himself to his creatures whom he loves. Yet even in those created things that have life, it is only imperfect life. Many are driven by blind instinct to fulfil their roles in the universe – that is life, but imperfect, incomplete life. Even the people who followed God’s guidance and sought to obey his laws lived a higher but still incomplete life – the Israelites. But then “the people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned” (Isa 9:2, NIV).
“Only Jesus is truly Life – so that all true Life in us is drawn from him. As he alone is truly Life, so he alone is truly Light. In all periods, but supremely in the period of Christ’s earthly ministry, ‘the light shineth in the darkness, and the darkness did not absorb it’” (W. Temple, Readings in St John’s Gospel, p7).
Rejoice in the light Christ’s coming brings.
Lord, fill me with light and perfect life this Christmas.
