“But to all who did receive him, to those who have yielded him their allegiance, he gave the right to become children of God ”.
Jn 1:12 NEB
God did things. He still does. He is supremely a God who acts . Yes, he speaks but his speech is so powerful and effective that his speaking effects actions. By speaking he acts.
The full coming of the Word in the birth, life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ is his mightiest act of all. And whilst people were, and are, free to accept or reject him, some do receive him. They did then. They do now. The disciples in Galilee left their nets and followed him. They gave him their allegiance. It grew into faith. He gave them the Holy Spirit, and their faith grew. So did their allegiance. Some gave their allegiance to such an extent that they even died for him. But along the way they became children of God – he gave them the right to become such. Whilst in one sense God is the Father of all living people, not all people are his children. Those that put their faith in Jesus, and who seek to be remoulded in the fashion of Christ, they become God’s children. And it is a growing, dynamic spiritual journey. They become! And they become more and more like Christ, knowing him and the Father intimately. Just as a child takes after a parent, so the child of God takes after the Father and the Son – and continues increasingly to do so as the years go by.
If you are a child of God, become more so by imitating Christ and growing into him.
PRAYER THOUGHT Lord, help me to become more and more your child.
