“Pharaoh said, ‘Who is the Lord, that I should obey him and let Israel go? I do not know the Lord and I will not let Israel go’”.
Ex 5:2 NIV
People always ask, “Who is God? Who is the Lord?” The German theologian, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, said that the most important question is always, “Who is Jesus Christ for us today?” If they were honest, some would say, “Employment”. Others would say “Fun”. Yet others would have to confess, “He is money”. And there are always some for whom he is power, knowledge, or success.
The Pharaoh of Moses’ day only knew the gods of the Egyptians. He probably knew of the gods of some of the more powerful nations. But Israel was a nonentity nation and their God, the Lord, was for Pharaoh a nonentity god. The last thing he would have willingly consented to was for his slave force to go. They were an integral part of his whole system and economy. What Pharaoh didn’t know was that the Lord he was defying was in fact the Lord God Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. Whilst Moses was humbly obeying God by coming to Pharaoh and demanding the release of the slaves, Pharaoh stubbornly refused to bow down and obey. But it was God’s plan that came to fruition and Pharaoh who lost out.
The same God is silently ordering affairs today. It is usually difficult to see him working and usually it is only in retrospect that his works can be clearly discerned. But most of the international leaders and people who pull the strings fail to see him or to acknowledge his lordship. See him with eyes of faith. And where you can’t see, trust him anyway.
Lord, I rejoice that you rule in all the earth.
