“I am the one who made the earth and created the human race to live there. By my power I stretched out the heavens; I control the sun, the moon and the stars”.

Isa 45:12 GNB

With the chaos that seems to characterize so much of the world most of the time we can well wonder if anyone or anything controls it. The nations have formed themselves into groups, the G8 and the G20. Then there are the non-aligned countries, the Brics countries, the united Nations, Nato and Seato. And the world economy seems to be lurching up and down depending on the progress and growth in China. Drug-running appears to be growing. Child pornography is on the increase. So is child abuse, crime, fraud and the sexual abuse of both women and children. And there is the environmental problem. Not to mention terrorism. The list goes on and on.
Into this world, with all its problems, uncertainties and insecurities, it is worthwhile to listen to Isaiah of the exile again, with his message from God saying, “I control the sun, the moon and the stars”. At creation God is depicted as bringing order out of the primeval chaos. And wherever he is, he brings order.
Jesus went up into the mountains to meet a man called “Legion” because he was said to be possessed by many demons. When Jesus had healed him he was found “sitting there, dressed and in his right mind” (Mk 5:15 NIV) – a scene of perfect order. He is the same Christ still today. And he still brings order where there has been chaos. He can be relied on to keep this “all shook up” world under control, however much it may appear to be spinning out of control.

Lord, keep your hand on the tiller of the universe.
