“When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak, because she thought, ‘If I just touch his clothes, I will be healed’”.
Mk 5:27, 28 NIV
Despite all the dazzling achievements and wonderful inventions of the last two hundred years, human knowledge and skill still has certain limits. And human misery seems to know no bounds. The human race seems able to conjure up new forms of inflicting suffering on itself with every passing age.
The woman who came to Jesus in the crowd had exhausted all the known cures for her complaint. She had spared no expense to get the best. In doing so she had not got better. In fact her condition had deteriorated. It must have been depressing in the extreme. But there is a saying which the woman most probably did not know but which is singularly appropriate for her situation, “Man’s extremity is God’s opportunity”. The “wits end” situation in which she found herself opens up the way for the glory of God to manifest itself in her cure. And Mark, in telling the story, wants us to notice the fact that human skill had been exhausted and to contrast that with the miraculous power of Christ. Like so many other people about whom Mark tells us, she throws herself in desperation on the mercy of God in Jesus.
Follow her example. Whatever your situation may be like – however pleasant or easy, however hard or desperate, reach out and touch Jesus spiritually and draw from his inexhaustible resources of love, grace and mercy. And then keep in touch. Never let him out of your sight or your reach, however the people around Jesus may jostle you and put you off. Keep touching Jesus.
Lord, let me touch you and be made clean.
