“Jesus kept looking around to see who had done it. Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell at his feet and, trembling with fear, told him the whole truth”.
Mk 5:32, 33 NIV
God is a big puzzle to many people. With seven billion people walking around planet earth how can we possibly conceive of him knowing every one? What is more, if the six billion of them who claim to hold some religious faith all pray to him, how can he possibly hear and respond to them all? And if the two-and-a half billion of them who claim to be Christians all deem themselves to be sons and daughters of God – where does that leave the rest of humankind? The testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ is that “Yes, he does love every one. For Jesus has said that even the hairs on your head are all numbered”.
How, with a crowd pressing and jostling around him, could Jesus ever hope to find out who had “touched” him in the special, healing way that was different to all the pushes, shoves and tugs that came his way in the throng? We don’t know how. We do know that he did. It is a glimpse into the amazing love of God for one individual soul.
And, as has so often been said, it shows that he loves each one as if that one were the only one he had to love. Apply that to yourself. Approach Jesus in faith and experience that individualized compassion. The woman in the story drew near to Jesus. That was the secret. She let nothing put her off. Don’t let anyone or anything put you off either.
Lord, help me ever to draw near to Jesus.
