“Actually, there is no ‘other gospel’, but I say this because there are some people who are upsetting you and trying to change the gospel of Christ”.
Gal 1:7 GNB
We have to remind ourselves constantly just what the gospel of Christ is. Many teachings sound right but miss the point. Some say “It doesn’t matter what you believe as long as do your best”. Others believe that by doing lots of church activities they are doing God’s work. Yet others learn off a string of Bible texts and can trot them out whenever they feel the need, and assume that they are “sticking to the Bible”. All of these ideas can be passed off for the gospel.
Paul was aghast to find that the people in Galatia were missing the point. They had been taught properly, but then other teachers came along who sounded good, but weren’t. Because the people had no Bible to refer to, and there was no authentic teacher available, they soon went off track. But there was no “nearly right” idea. Christ, and Christ alone, was the way to salvation. “Doing your best” was no good news at all. Neither was a lot of religious activity. It takes more than parroting Bible texts to have real faith. These are all substitutes for the real thing. They are near enough to deceive the unwary. And that is what the Galatians were.
Know what the gospel is. It is the conviction that Jesus is the Son of God, that he died for our sins, that he rose again and ascended. It is believing that faith in him alone, and not fulfilling sets of rules, is the true way of Christ. Not anything you do, just believing is the way to God.
Lord let me have a growing faith in you.
