“Jesus Christ … gave himself for our sins to rescue us from the present evil age”.

Gal 1:3, 4 NIV

We do not have to look far to discover the evil in the world around us. There is fraud and trickery on a global scale. There is exploitation of the weak and the poor. There are wars and rumours of wars. There is murder and malice, lies and lawlessness. There is wickedness and witchcraft, crime and crookery, poverty and pain. What is more, it often seems as if the forces of evil combine and conspire together to bring mounting misery and suffering to increasing numbers of people.
It was the same in the days of the New Testament, when Paul wrote his letter to the Christians in Galatia. One great power dominated the known world – Rome. Rome was a byword for sexual licentiousness, drunkenness and debauchery of every sort. Slavery was the order of the day and the master of a slave could ill -treat that slave in any way he wished. And every war produced more slaves. Rome used the cruel practice of crucifixion to punish criminals. People who were disloyal to the emperor were thrown to the lions in the Colosseum arena. The evil of the world inevitably contaminated individuals, thus making them more evil. Into this dark world came Christ, holy and full of love. And part of his mis- sion was to overcome evil and to rescue people from the evil that enmeshed them.
The risen Christ is still at work in today’s world, seeking to rescue you from the worst of its clutches. Let him occupy an ever larger place in your heart and life. Only he is powerful enough to save you. Live in his salvation.

PRAYER THOUGHT Lord, let me know your sanctifying power in the war against evil.
