“You foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? Before your very eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed as crucified”.
Gal 3:1 NIV
There is a familiar saying known as “Murphy’s Law”. It states, “If anything can go wrong, it will”. It applies in many situations in life.
Paul knew all about it. He worked his socks off to bring the gospel to the places to which he went - Corinth, Ephesus, Colosse and so forth - but when his back was turned the mischief began. He taught the Christian believers in these places what the meaning of the gospel was, but, like a compass needle that always goes back to north, they were soon back to their old ways and their old ideas. The problem for the Galatians was that the old, Jewish system was easy and straightforward. “Obey the commandments and you’re in God’s good books”. It was not so easy to grasp the fact that Christ’s death on the cross made that achievement-based method unnecessary. In the old way the sacrifice of an animal “fixed” things with God. It wasn’t clear how a human being dying could replace that. So the Galatian Christians had let themselves be duped into reverting back to their Judaistic ideas and way of life. Maybe some Jews had persuaded them. But maybe Christians who themselves had gone wrong had sneaked in and perverted their minds. It broke their faith and Paul knew that it was the easiest and quickest way for the Christian faith to be wiped out.
Find out all you can about the theology Paul worked out and stick to it through thick and thin. Not by what you do, but by who you trust in is the Christian gospel.
Lord, help me to follow the true gospel.
