“I will not bring on you any of the diseases I brought on the Egyptians, for I am the Lord, who heals you”.

Ex 15:26 NIV

The human body is an amazing machine. It can perform numerous actions beneficial to the person. And it is subject to numerous problems, diseases, injuries and setbacks. The fact of widespread unhealthiness has given rise to the massive industry of medicine. And health is a complicated condition. Any doctor knows that many people delude themselves into believing they are ill just to get sympathy or a day off work.

Maybe the Israelites had some “doctors” who practised primitive medicine in their party. But often illnesses were treated by the priests. Here, as God had healed the waters of Marah by miraculous action, so he confirms that by his very nature he was “the Lord who heals you” in a more general sense. They had just experienced his action as a saving God. He had saved them from slavery, bondage and further degradation. This characteristic was a permanent feature of his nature for ever thereafter. Now at Marah he reveals his healing powers as well, confirming that he is a “doctor-God” for all time.

Jesus Christ fulfilled this ancient role of his Father-God. He was a teacher, but so much more than a talker-teacher. He healed the whole person and in doing so lived out the healing role the Father had predicted and claimed here in the desert. Down the centuries he has gone on healing and people with a Christian faith today not only consult their doctor but pray for and receive healing as well. Sometimes there are surprising miracles, but not always. Let us marvel and thank God for the dramatic advances made in modern medicine and surgery.

Lord, let your healing powers flow throughout the world.
