“The Lord said to Moses, ‘Take some of the leaders of Israel with you, and go on ahead of the people. Take along the stick with which you struck the Nile. I will stand before you on a rock at Mount Sinai. Strike the rock, and water will come out of it for the people to drink’. Moses did so in the presence of the leaders of Israel”.

Ex 17:5, 6 GNB

Many people don’t have a lot of faith in prayer. They feel that many prayers never get answered and therefore that God doesn’t hear them. They hear of other people claiming that their prayers have been answered and suspect that they are stringing along a story. Alternatively they assume that those who do have prayers answered are specialists in the art of prayer and know how to “get through”. Of course many people dismiss it all as “a lot of hooey”.

But God has unexpected ways of answering our prayers. He often does so by saying “No”. At other times he may say, “Wait a while”. And he is also known to answer in a way we never thought likely or possible – a way we have never imagined. This is what happened here. God answered Moses’ prayer with a miracle. Moses was to strike a rock in the desert with the rod he had previously used. And out from the rock gushed water! God was saying, “I have not stopped caring for you and loving you. I initiated this journey and it is all part of my purpose for your future. I always give life in one or more of its many forms. And I provide that which promotes life”.

Never be surprised at the strange way God may answer your prayers. Just keep at it.

Lord, teach me to pray.
