Daily Devotion

“I am the Lord, your Holy One, your creator, Israel”.
Isa 43:15 NEB

Creation is a fascinating process to observe. A car company devises a new model and, amid a fanfare of publicity, a new and innovative model is launched on the public. It goes faster, is more economical, more environmentally friendly, and more luxurious to drive and ride in than anything previously imagined. There is, of course, a price to pay for all this, and that too is innovative!
Not all human creativity is successful or useful. God’s creation isn’t a one-off act in Genesis, “finished en klaar”. It points to his ongoing creative activity and is a constantly recurring theme in the Bible. God’s creation is never a mere adaptation of something else. It is always completely new, “out of nothing”, with his own signature clearly marked and the imprint of his character on it. And this strange tribe of Israelites, they too were a completely new entity – because they were his idea, and of his making, designed to fulfil his purpose in the world to witness to his truth, his word, and his actions. Creating them was a long ongoing struggle, so deep was their sinfulness and rebellion. But because he was a creating God – ever making anew – there was always hope that they would one day become what he designed and desired.
Then came Jesus, co-creator with the Father, and in rising from the dead he began a new creation, founding the new people of God, the church of Jesus Christ. And you are part and parcel of that new creation.

Finish then thy new creation, pure and spotless let us be;
Let us see they great salvation, perfectly restored in thee;
Changed from glory into glory, till in heaven we take our place,
Till we cast our crowns before thee, lost in wonder, love, and praise.
– C. Wesley
