Daily Devotion

“Put on the full armour of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand”.

Eph 6:13 NIV
During World War II an intense battle was brewing up. One army had gained control of a strategic vantage point and the enemy knew it had to attack and push the defending army back so that it could take the place and launch further attacks. The general sent a message to the officer commanding the attacking division saying, “You must throw everything into this battle. Whatever counter-attacks are staged, you must not retreat. Having gained control of this place you must dig in and become like an iron peg in a block of ice. You must not yield. The outcome of the whole campaign may hang on this battle”.
Paul wanted his Christian disciples in Ephesus to become like iron pegs in blocks of ice in a spiritual sense. The attacks of Satan being insidious, clever and camouflaged, Christians would need to be strong, resolute, and determined in their spirituality, their behaviour, their speech and their out-of-church conduct. Any compromise or lowering of defences could lead to defeat.
The same applies today. The evil surrounding Christian believers is no less intense than it was in first-century Ephesus. Arguments against the existence of God are frequently being repeated. Taunts, jibes, jokes and accusations against Christianity are constantly being thrown at believers by atheists and agnostics, as well as by people of other faiths. Sneers at the morality of some Christian leaders make it difficult to defend the church. Jesus never promised anyone a bed of roses. Being an iron pin in a block of ice is not for softies.

PRAYER THOUGHT Lord, help me to stand firm in all situations.
