Daily Prayer

Month end – 29th January 2016

Lord, it’s nearly the end of the month again. It’s time to think of money and to pay my accounts. Give me wisdom as I try to work out what is important and what isn’t. Make me a good steward of the money I call mine. Help me to avoid unnecessary debt. In Christ’s name I ask it. AMEN.

At breaking point – 28th January 2016

Lord God, I pray for those people who are at breaking point today. Bless those who find their work tasks too many to bear. Strengthen those who are living with back-breaking tensions. Stand with those who are facing conflicts that are churning them up. In Christ’s name. AMEN.

What a mess – 27th January 2016

Lord God, the world is in a mess. People are crooking each other in many ways. Politicians are lying to the public, and businesses are swindling each other. Criminals are getting away with their crimes, and married partners are being unfaithful. Christ heal and save in love and truth. AMEN.

GOD TO BE ALL IN ALL

“When everything and everyone is finally under God’s rule, the Son will step down, taking his place with everyone else, showing that God’s rule is absolutely comprehensive – a perfect ending!”

1 Cor 15:27,28 EHP

Many people believe that time goes round and round in a circle of never-ending motion. It doesn’t. The Bible, at least, conceives as time beginning, continuing and ending. And God can intervene at any point. At one point he intervened and brought about creation. It was an act of God. At another point he intervened and rescued his people from slavery in Egypt. At another he stepped in and gave Jesus. He will step in at the end of all things and bring everything under subjection to his rule. The fact that he raised Jesus Christ from the dead shows that he is supreme Lord and that he has already overcome the forces of evil and death in a preliminary way.

There is much to come in the meantime. Two thousand years have passed since he raised Jesus. Humanity has moved on. Empires have arisen and fallen away. Great people have come and gone. Wars have raged. Many scientific inventions and technological advances have taken place. Many medical cures for old illnesses have come and enriched and lengthened human life. Different systems of government have been tried. Social customs have been tried. Humanity has “advanced”. Many have come to reject any notion of God. Many belief systems have been tried – and abandoned.

It is all under God’s final sway and control. Nothing we do can get him to “gee-up” because we are impatient to see the final end. Nor can anything we do delay that grand summing up. He will bring his final consummation whenever it shall please his will. Keep watching.

PRAYER THOUGHT
Lord God, it’s all in your hands!
